Book Review: The Lightning Thief

Updated: Aug 20, 2022

Reviewed by Alberta P. (15 years)

Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief (based on ancient Greek mythology) is the first of five books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It is a thrilling and adventurous fictional book enhanced with a mythical twist.

In the book, twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is going on a dangerous quest to retrieve Zeus’s lightning bolt from the Underworld with his friends. They are forced to fight several monsters, as well as; befriend mythical figures along the way.

The Lightning Thief is geared towards middle-school-aged kids who are the same age as the main character. It addresses real-life problems and situations like betrayal, feeling estranged, and not being good enough (some of these things preteens and teens may relate to or come across).

The Lightning Thief is filled with suspense, humor, and sarcasm, which makes it an enjoyable read. It was one of the books I genuinely liked because I wanted to read more when I finished it. This book will make you want to buy the other four books in the series.
